Prepare For Upcoming MRI, CT And X-Ray
Steps To Follow Before Getting An MRI, CT Or X-Ray
MRI does not utilize any form of ionizing radiation, so no special preparation is needed. You may eat normally and take your regular medication. Please wear comfortable clothing, like sweats. Clothing with zippers, metal buttons or snaps cannot be worn. This includes underwire bras as well. If needed, a cotton dressing gown will be available for you to use.
PreparationBecause of the potentially harmful effects associated with all metallic objects in a magnetic field, you should check with your physician or MRI Technologist if you have:
- - Pacemaker
- - Ear implants
- - Surgical staples
- - Neuro-stimulator
- - Aneurysm clip(s)
- - Implanted drug infusion devices
- - Worked as a welder or grinder of metal
- - With some examinations, an injection into a vein is required. The MRI technologist will explain the procedure further if your exam requires this.

Some CT scans require the use of a contrast medium. Given intravenously, the contrast agent highlights certain body parts to enable the radiologist to better see any abnormalities. CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis often require the patient to drink a barium-based liquid to outline the intestines for better viewing.
PreparationIn advance of your exam, please inform your radiologist or technologist if you are:
- - Have had a previous adverse reaction to iodine contrast injection
- - Have renal disease
- - Are over 65
- - Have asthma and use an inhaler 2 or more times per day
- - Are diabetic and taking Glucaphage
If you are pregnant, please tell your doctor or a patient representative before your test.

Some X-Ray tests require patients to drink a contrast medium such as barium or iodine. This helps outline the specific area to detect any irregularities.
PreparationPrior to your X-Ray test, please inform your Radiologist if you are:
- -Allergic to barium or iodine or had a previous adverse reaction to the contrast medium
- -Have any metal implants
If you are pregnant, please tell your doctor or a patient representative before your test.

Best MRI!
I had a seated spine MRI. The staff was very professional, kind and made me feel comfortable. I was also allowed to watch a movie during the MRI so it went by fast. A special thanks to the MRI tech Kathy for taking such great care of me while in pain.
